The Vilas County snowmobile trails and routes will temporarily close on March 11, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. The warm weather and high traffic since the latest snowfall have taken its toll with many areas showing bare ground and pavement. This was not an easy decision for the Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance members to make. If weather conditions change and trails are deemed safe, trails may be reopened. Just a reminder, all snowmobile trails will close for the season on Monday, March 31, 2025.

On Saturday January 25th the SnoBunnies held the First Annual King of the Lake Snowmobile Drag Event, again at Lynx Lake Lodge, located on Trail # 6. The weather did cooperate this time as the trail opened the week before and the day saw light snow throughout. We say First Annual because despite a significant amount of planning, we were still unsure how the event would be received. It was a great success as we had over a 1,000 people cycle through during the day, with probably 300 there at any given time. This included the participants as well as snowmobilers just passing through. The event featured more than 75 racers which competed for trophies and cash prizes in over 20 different classes and over 120 runs down the track. For those not participating there were raffles, Merchandise for sale and food sales provided by the Presque Isle Lions Club and inside at the bar. Race participants came from several midwestern states and Mike Wolf, from WRJO was on site announcing the race.
The Presque Isle Fire Department went above and beyond bringing just an ambulance out to the lake—they also brought their SHERP (that large funky looking silver machine) out and were offering rides to anyone. Along with that, they enrolled Boulder Junction for backup rescue. It really showed a community coming together for an event. Pretty neat!
For those of you who don’t know, Charlie Fleck (owner of Lynx Lake Bar & Resort) is actively involved in snowmobile racing and drew on his many contacts within the industry to promote and market the event as well as donating gear for raffles. There were several sponsors that donated to cover miscellaneous costs including Lynx Lake Bar and Resort, Timberline Sports, FXR (Gear), Billy Hogan, Mike Brandt, Beaver Lodge of Mercer, Pine Lake Lodge of Mercer, SS Sports of Mercer and B&B Adventures of Mercer.
If you’d like to see any of the race results, they are posted on the Lynx Lake Resort & Bar Facebook Page.
The Raffle Winners Were:
FXR Gear: Brian Egel, Jennifer Avery, Briana Schovain (helmet & jacket-lucky girl)
28″ Omnivore Griddle: Cole Schoepke
Battery Chainsaw: Kim Yencich
Once again, thanks to all the volunteers who helped make the event a success as well as our sponsors.
